Between the Cevennes and Provence, between the garrigue and the Rhone valley, the region of the Cèze Valley - Côte du Rhône stretches towards the northeast of the department of the Gard. Less than one hour from major cultural sites, such as Uzès, the Pont du Gard, Nîmes, Avignon, Orange and the natural sites of the Camargue, the Ardèche gorges and the Cévennes mountains, the region also offers its own heritage and natural sites which are well worth a visit...
Roman and medieval heritage :
There are many important remains dating from the Roman period: Caesar’s Camp in Laudun, Saint Vincent Oppidum in Gaujac… Numerous sites and villages from the medieval period are open to visitors: Gicon Castle in Chusclan, Pont du Saint Esprit which spans the Rhone... There are a great many religious heritage sites: A multitude of well preserved and recently renovated Romanesque chapels, a very beautiful Carthusian monastery of Valbonne in St-Paulet-de-Caisson (historic monument)
Land and Know-how :
The winemaking tradition is one of the riches of the area and is far from being the least important... The Rhone valley region, dominated by vineyards, saw the birth of the famous "Côtes du Rhône" wines and, today, produces AOC Côtes du Rhône wines; Côtes du Rhône Villages (a label reserved for the very best vintages) from Laudun, Chusclan and Saint Gervais; Crus Lirac and Tavel (1st rosé in France). The winemakers present their production in numerous wineries and wine shops, open all year round, which can be found along the tourist routes of the Côtes du Rhône (Emerald and Purple Itineraries).
* The Rhone, the Ardèche, the Cèze, the Tave... water is a playground where you can enjoy Canoeing.
* Excursions in all their forms: walking, horseriding and mountain biking. There are more than 300 km of paths between the Cèze and the Ardèche available to walkers and hikers, without counting the GR routes and other itineraries which pass through the region (GR4 and 42, itineraries in Sabran, Vénéjan, and Laudun around Caesar's Camp...)
* Learn while having fun: Marcoule Visiatome (www.visiatome.fr) to find out everything about radioactivity and its future, or the Parc Astronomie du Soleil et du Cosmos in Les Angles (www.parcducosmos.com)
* For family entertainment, there are some leisure parks : Amazonia in Roquemaure (www.parcamazonia.com)
